I have a question for quilters?

My 6 year old brother and I go on picnics quite often. I would love to make a special quilt for us and have a couple of questions. I’m not sure what kind of quilt I want to make but I know that I don’t want it to just be squares of fabric sewn together in a basic design, nor do I want anything elaborate. I’m thinking maybe a simple 2 squares stacked with a rectangle on the side and across the top of the squares for each section. I’m wondering how easy this would be for a beginning quilter and what the easiest way would be to do it? I’ve sewn before and work at a fabric store so I’m not completely inept. I’ve also seen rag quilts and know those are very simple. However, most of the fabrics I’m thinking of using are cotton calicos. I’ve only seen rag quilts done with fleece or flannel. Can they be done with regular cotton quilter’s fabric? And can I use my previously mentioned design on them? If so, how do I make it? Thank you SO VERY MUCH to whomever helps me. It means a lot to me.

I think a Rag Quilt is an excellent choice for a first quilt, and it can certainly be made with smooth cottons, homespuns, or even denims (think used jeans!) just as well as from flannel. I’m giving you links to a couple of different rag quilt patterns, just so you can get a feel for how they’re done. The ‘about.com’ site also has good beginner instructions. Once you understand the process, it should be easy for you to adapt it for other block designs. Good luck with a wonderful project.
