Is there any problem with a quilting template that is a tiny bit off?

I have lots of Plastic Canvas and I am thinking of making my own templates for quilting squares. For instance, when I measure for a 6″ square it comes out to 6 +1/16th. Is that gonna cause any real problems? Also any fabric stores on line that any of you recommend?? I ordered some quilt fabric form Jo Anns and some from Quilt in a day. I appreciate any ideas since I am very new to quilting.

If ALL of your templates are exactly the same amount off, it won’t make a difference. However, if they’re different amounts off, then you’ll have a problem. The key is consistency. Are you planning on hand piecing? If so, templates are a good idea. If you’re going to use a machine, you’d be better off to invest in a rotary cutter, self-healing mat and some acrylic rulers.

In the past few years, Connecting Threads started making their own line of fabrics and it’s not bad stuff.

I do use fabric from JoAnn’s but I am very picky about it. I’d hesitate to buy from them online because it’s hard to tell what quality the fabric is. Their “artist” fabrics – M’Liss Rae Hawley, Heidi Grace, Debbie Mumm, and Stonehill Collection are pretty good. They also carry Alexander Henry, which is good quality.
